The year was 1905 and the place was London, England. Hans Wilsdorf and his brother-in-law Alfred Davis founded 'Wilsdorf & Davis' and began importing high-quality Swiss watch movements, produced by Hermann Aegler, and placing them in good-quality cases made by Dennison and others. These early watches were sold to jewelers who marketed them with their own names on the dial. The earliest known examples of Wilsdorf & Davis watches are signed 'W&D' inside the case back. Contrary to popular belief, Wilsdorf was neither Swiss nor a watchmaker. Wilsdorf was a German national, and Davis was British.
The 'Rolex' trademark was registered in 1908, and the firm opened an office in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, the world's center for high-quality watchmaking. There is some debate as to the origins of the Rolex name. Wilsdorf was said to want an easily recognizable name that could be pronounced in any language and would fit easily on the dial of a watch. Some suggest that the name came from the French phrase horlogerie exquise, meaning 'exquisite horology'. J.P. Hess and James Dowling, in their book The Best of Time: Rolex Wristwatches, An Unauthorized History, clam that the name was just made up. 'Rolex' was first registered as a company name on November 15, 1915. The Rolex name did not appear on the watch dial until 1926.
In modern Rolex watches, it is rare to find a clasp code that is the same year as the watch case. On the clasp hinge is one two letters followed by a number. The letters represent the year code, and the numbers signify the month.
Rolex Moves to Geneva and Launches the 'Oyster'
- Rolex Serial Number Production Dates The serial number has traditionally been located at 6 o'clock between the lugs and under the bracelet. In 2005, Rolex began engraving the serial number on the rehaut (French for 'flange') between the dial and the crystal as well as the 6' o'clock location.
- The Rolex serial numbers are found between the lugs on the side of the case at the 6 o'clock side, behind the bracelet. This 4-8 digit number is engraved by Rolex on every watch and it can be used to determine its production date.
- Aug 15, 2018 - Rolex serial numbers are located between the watch lugs at 6 o'clock (remove the bracelet for the case). A unique number is given to every.
Rolex has been engraving their watches with a unique Rolex serial numbers, and Rolex models number since the 1920’s as tool to track the production year of a Rolex watch. The production age of a pre-owned Rolex watch is a significant factor in determining its current market value. In 1919, the company's headquarters was moved to Geneva, Switzerland, because taxes and export duties in the United Kingdom were driving up costs. The company was first established in Geneva as the Rolex Watch Company. Subsequently, the name was changed to Montres Rolex, SA and finally just Rolex, SA.
One of the most important developments in the history of Rolex watches came when Wilsdorf purchased the patent for a revolutionary moisture-proof winding stem and crown from its inventors, George Peret and Paul Perregaux. The result of this acquisition was the development of the world's first truly waterproof case, which was given the name 'Oyster' in 1926. In an effort to market the new Oyster watch, Wilsdorf hired a young London typist named Mercedes Glietz, the first woman to swim the English Channel. In 1927, prior to Glietz' second attempt to swim the Channel, Wilsdorf announced to the world that she would be wearing his water-proof Rolex Oyster watch and that she would emerge from the water and his watch would be running and on time, something which had never been previously accomplished. Though Miss Glietz did not complete this second crossing, which occurred under much more difficult conditions than her first swim, the watch performed beautifully. She and her Rolex Oyster made headlines around the world!

To this day, Rolex continues to form creative advertising partnerships with athletes and athletic events. They are the official timekeeper of the Wimbledon and Australian Open tennis tournaments, and the Americas Cup yacht races, just to name a few.
The Wilsdorf Foundation
After his wife died in 1944, Wilsdorf established the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation to which he left all of his Rolex shares, ensuring that a significant portion of the company's income would go to charity in perpetuity. Rolex is still owned by this private charitable trust which supports many children's charities (Mr. Wilsdorf was an orphan) and cutting-edge entrepreneurial endeavors (Mr. Wilsdorf held over 700 patents). No Rolex shares are traded on any public exchange.
Today, the Rolex brand is recognized throughout the world as a symbol of prestige and quality. Rolex is by far the single largest luxury watch brand, producing about 2000 watches per day, and is certainly one of the top watch brands in the world.
Rolex Innovations:
Rolex has made many important contributions to the field of horology. Some key innovations are:
- The first truly waterproof watch. (Rolex Oyster, 1926)
- The first 'auto-rotor' self-winding watch. (1932)
- The first wristwatch with an automatically changing date on the dial (Rolex Datejust, 1945)
- The first wristwatch with an automatically changing day and date on the dial (Rolex Day-Date)
- The first wristwatch case waterproof to 100m (330ft) (Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner, 1953)
- The first wristwatch to show two time zones at once (Rolex GMT Master, 1954)
- The first watch manufacturer to earn chronometer certification for a wristwatch
Rolex holds the record for the most certified chronometer movements in the category of wristwatches. Rolex also participated in the development of the original quartz watch movement. Although Rolex has made very few battery-powered quartz models, the company's engineers were instrumental in design and implementation of the technology during the early 1970s.

Rolex serial numbers are located on the side of the watch case, between the lugs on the 6:00 end. It is usually necessary to release the bracelet in order to see the serial number. This should only be done by an experienced watchmaker to prevent scratching the case or bracelet. You should never purchase a Rolex watch if the serial number has been removed or tampered with.

Some collectors prefer to acquire their watches as pre-owned pieces from retailers as well as auction houses. As the counterfeiters continue to fill the market with faux Rolex watches, the question of authenticity weighs heavily on the minds of many collectors. Some of the reproductions are so good that only a professional watchmaker can distinguish between an authentic piece and a forgery. We highly recommend that you consult a professional prior to purchasing any luxury watch. However, the information below can help you make a quick determination if the watch you are interested in is a genuine Rolex.
REFERENCE NUMBER APPEARANCE AND LOCATION
A Rolex reference number is as unique as the fingerprints of its owner. Every Rolex has a different reference number that is located between the lugs of the watch at the 12 o'clock position. Many counterfeit watches have a completely fictitious reference number and some may not even have one. Here are a few things that will help you in establishing the authenticity of your Rolex watch based on the reference number:
- The reference number inscription should resemble a diamond engraving and not an acid etched look.
- Rolex models pre 1980's carry a four digit reference number.
- Rolex models released between 1980's and 2000 will have a 5 digit number.
- The first three digits of the reference number indicate the model type on the traditional Rolex models.
- Rolex models released between 2000 and the present have a 6 digit reference number with a number '1' prefacing the 5 digit reference number. The numeric preface may change as more models are being released.
- The 5th digit references to the bezel type
- The 6th digit references the bracelet type.

HOW TO DETERMINE THE CORRECT BEZEL OPTION OF YOUR ROLEX
It is not uncommon to find a truly stunning, genuine Rolex where the bezel, dial, markers and the bracelet have been changed to cater to the style and character of the previous owner. This practice is so widespread that it is commonly accepted as long as the parts are genuine Rolex parts. However, if you are a true purist and want to make sure that your watch is in truly pristine and untouched condition, the following is an explanation on how to determine the original bezel type of your Rolex with a production date starting in the 1980's to the present.

The code that delineates the bezel type is located within the Reference (Model) number of your Rolex. The 5th digit of the number is the bezel code.

HOW TO DETERMINE THE CORRECT BRACELET OPTION OF YOUR ROLEX
If you are purchasing a pre-owned Rolex, it is not uncommon to find that the bracelet has been replaced. As mentioned previously, this generally does not lower the value of the watch unless the bracelet has been exchanged from a precious metal to a leather strap and so on. In order to determine the bracelet type, locate the Reference Number and look at 6th digit. The last digit generally indicates the type of bracelet used for the your particular watch model.

ROLEX CLASP CODES
A genuine Rolex watch will have a set of letters and numbers on the inside of the clasp hinge. The letters and numbers designate the year and the month of the bracelet manufacturing. So if the inside of the bracelet is stamped OP9, that means that the bracelet was manufactured in September of 2006.
Be aware that it is not uncommon to find a newer watch with an older bracelet and vice versa. Especially in the pre owned market, previous owners will often switch out bracelets to match their personal taste. This practice does not devalue the watch as long as the bracelet was replaced with a genuine Rolex bracelet that matches the style and the precious metals in the watch itself.
Some Rolex models came with a leather strap or a cloth strap. This is common in vintage models and dress models.

ROLEX SERIAL NUMBERS
Rolex serial number is also known as the case number or a style number and is located between the lugs at the 6 o'clock position. The serial number of a Rolex watch is used to date the watch and establish its market value and authenticity. In the case of vintage watches, the older the watch, the higher the price. Some collectors search for years before they find a specific serial number to add to their collection. Below we explain what each part of a Rolex serial number means and how to establish authenticity of your watch.
Rolex Serial Number Lookup Authenticity
Starting in the 1920's Rolex began the practice of stamping all of their watches with serial numbers. In 1950's, the serial numbers reached 999, 999 mark and the count was restarted from 100,001. In the 1960's the mark of 999,999 was reached once again and in order to prevent confusion, Rolex added a 7th digit to their serial number. In the 1980's 9, 999,999 mark was reached at which point Rolex began adding a letter to their serial numbers. So far, letters ' R', 'L', 'E', 'X', 'N', 'C', 'S', 'W', 'T', 'U', 'A', 'P', 'K, 'Y', 'F' and 'D' were used.
Rolex watches produced between 1950's and 1970's have a Roman numeral and an two digit Arabic numeral code that appears on the case back. The Roman numerals that are used are I, II, III, and IV delineating the quarter in which the watch was produced, the two digit Arabic numeral code signifies the year of production.
